Russian Maxim Khramtsov reached the final of the taekwondo qualifying tournament and obtained an Olympic license for the Paris Games.
The 26-year-old Russian beat Serbian Stefan Takov (2-1) in the semi-final in the weight category up to 80 kg. This allowed Khramtsov to obtain a license to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games.
In January, the World Taekwondo Federation changed the conditions for admitting Russians to international competitions to neutral status. The Federation Council unanimously approved the participation of Russian athletes in tournaments recognized by World Taekwondo, provided that they are allowed to participate in competitions organized by the organization. Previously, neutral athletes were not allowed to participate in competitions recognized by World Taekwondo due to the complexity of the eligibility process.
Khramtsov is the first Russian taekwondo athlete in history to win Olympic gold. He also won the European Championship twice and became a five-time Grand Prix champion.
The Summer Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
