Head of the Russian Wrestling Federation (FSBR) Mikhail Mamiashvili told that the presence of images of the double Olympic champion Abdulrashida Sadulayev and Games silver medalist Artur Nayfonov on one of the posters of the European Olympic qualifying tournament gives importance to the competition.
The European licensing tournament will be held in Baku from April 5 to 7. One of the tournament posters depicts Russian wrestlers Sadulaev and Naifonov. Eight Russians will compete for a ticket to the Olympic Games.
— The presence of such stars (on the poster) gives any tournament status and meaning. Unfortunately, it is not the wrestling world that decides today (who will participate), Mamiashvili told .
Anvar Allahyarov (category up to 60 kg), Ruslan Bichurin (up to 67 kg), Adlet Tyulubayev (up to 77 kg), Milad Alirzaev (up to 87 kg), Magomed Murtazaliev (up to 97 kg) and double Olympic medalist, world and European champion Sergei Semenov (up to 130 kg).
Among the free wrestlers, two-time Olympic champion, five-time world and European champion Abdulrashid Sadulayev (up to 97 kg) and Olympic and world medalist, three-time European champion Artur Nayfonov (up to 86 kg) will participate in the tournament.
To obtain a license to participate in the Paris Olympic Games, athletes must reach the final. In freestyle wrestling, Russian wrestlers have already won four out of six places.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced in December 2023 that it would allow Russian athletes who successfully qualified for the 2024 Olympics to have individual neutral status without national symbols. On March 19, it was announced that Russian athletes would not be able to participate in the opening ceremony of the Games. The IOC also said that, according to the most likely scenario, 36 Russian athletes will participate in the 2024 Olympic Games and will have to sign a special document. Athletes’ compliance with the conditions for admission to neutral status will be determined by the commission.
The Summer Olympics will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11.
