The International Boxing Association (IBA) said the organization’s lawyers will carefully study the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) verdict rejecting an appeal against the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) decision to recognize the IBA.
On Tuesday, CAS rejected the IBA’s appeal against the IOC session’s decision to withdraw recognition of the organization. In June, the IOC, following a vote, announced the derecognition of the IBA.
— The IBA was disappointed to learn that the CAS did not approve the appeal against the decision of the IOC session. Despite the IBA’s diligent and painstaking efforts to create a strong and stable boxing home for athletes and coaches through major reforms, the association claims its initiatives have been ignored by both the IOC and CAS .
IBA strongly disagrees with the oversimplified language of the CAS press release. First, the IOC never provided the IBA with a coherent road map or established direct lines of communication, even after the IBA proposed appointing a dedicated person who would be available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week to resolve these issues.
IBA believes that ignoring these and other improvements reflects bias. We also understand this by noting that the CAS is far from being independent of the IOC. These doubts are based on recent comments by Thomas Bach.
Guided by personal and purely political motivations, the IOC President disrespected the Olympic Charter and discredited himself and the IOC as an organization by citing the reason for the refusal of recognition of the IBA.
The IBA will refrain from further comment until the CAS decision has been thoroughly reviewed by its legal experts. This is currently happening to determine whether the organization will appeal to the Swiss Federal Court,” the statement said.
In 2019, the IOC temporarily withdrew the recognition status of the IBA for economic reasons and due to a management crisis within the organization, and also presented demands for reforms. In mid-June, the IBA appealed this decision to the CAS and asked the court to suspend the IOC’s recommendations until the court’s final verdict.
