Ryan knocked down Devin three times and won on points.
American boxer Ryan Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs) achieved a sensational victory over the WBC light welterweight world champion Devin Haney (31-1, 15 KOs). Devin suffered the first defeat of his career.
The fight took place in Brooklyn, at the Barclays Center. The rivals exchanged strong opening rounds, but then the advantage gradually passed to Ryan, who knocked down the champion three times.
According to the judges’ notes, Ryan triumphed with scores of 114:100 and 115:109. Another judge recorded a draw (112:112).
Garcia, despite the victory, did not take the championship belt from Haney, as he exceeded the agreed weight category limit. According to WBC head Mauricio Sulaiman, the belt does not become vacant, but remains in Devin.
Haney defeated Regis Prograis by unanimous decision in his last fight. Garcia knocked out Mexican Oscar Duarte in early December 2023.
