The decision on the participation of Russian wrestlers in the Olympic Games in Paris will be made in accordance with the position of the country’s leadership and the wishes of the people for whom the athletes perform, said the president of the Russian Wrestling Federation (FSBR). Mikhail Mamiashvili .
Russian wrestlers will be able to compete for the remaining Olympic licenses at the World License Tournament in Istanbul from May 9-12. Currently, they have obtained 12 licenses out of 18 possible: all six in freestyle wrestling, as well as two in Greco-Roman wrestling and four in women’s wrestling. Licenses are not registered.
— How do you assess the position of the Russians before the Istanbul tournament? Will it be possible to obtain all the missing licenses?
“I believe that in women’s wrestling, four licenses is success. We are confident that we can recover the missing two. There are still disappointments in Greco-Roman wrestling, but we believe in the team and its success at the Istanbul tournament. You must earn all the licenses in classic Greco-Roman wrestling.
— Do wrestlers go to the Olympic Games?
— I repeat: our task is to take out licenses. And then it will be a matter of serious consideration, we will weigh the pros and cons and make a decision. Do not consider my words pompous, but the decision will be made in accordance with the position of the country’s leadership and the wishes of the people for whom we are playing. This decision must be consistent with our country and the mood of the supporters.
— Will we find out this summer?
— I think it will be after the Istanbul tournament. I ask my colleagues and comrades to refrain from radical epithets about participation in the Olympic Games, from one side or the other, ”reports the correspondent of , reporting Mamiashvili’s words.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced in December 2023 that it would allow Russian athletes who successfully qualify for the 2024 Olympics to individual neutral status without a flag, anthem or other national symbol. The IOC also banned the participation of athletes associated with security forces or who have expressed support for the SVO.
The Paris Olympic Games will be held from July 26 to August 11.
