The head of the WBC noted the importance of Oleksandr Usik’s victory in the fight with Tyson Fury
WBC President Mauricio Suleiman commented on the upcoming fight for the title of absolute world heavyweight champion between the WBO/WBA/IBF/IBO champion Alexander Usik and WBC belt holder Tyson Furynoting the significance of the event for Ukraine.
“Ukraine is going through so much and has fighters performing in the ring. Sergey Bogachuk just won the WBC Interim title, he was just in Mexico; Vasiliy Lomachenko travels to Australia to try to regain his title against Kambosos; and also Alexander Gvozdyk against David Benavidez… The power that comes from the country that has been invaded must have a lot of energy, and the result in boxing lifts the entire spirit of the country. Therefore, Usik’s victory over Fury will be a great moment for Ukrainian boxing.”
“In Britain, many people want to see the Fury-Joshua fight. But the WBC received a petition, which the board voted on. The boxers agreed to a unification fight and a rematch, and that is what we decided. Of course, if there is another petition, the WBC board will discuss it and vote on it, but at the moment the petition includes a Fury-Usyk fight and a rematch.”
Let us remind you that the big boxing evening on May 18 will be hosted by Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh. The WBC proposes to reform the judges for the reporting fight between Usyk and Fury, increasing their number to 5-6 people. Penalties for boxers who refuse to fight are $10 million.
WBC President Mauricio Suleiman announced that an agreement had been concluded between the boxers for a re-fight. The WBO is also ready to sanction the second fight. It was reported that the fate of a possible rematch depends on the holding of the first fight. Fury said that the contract has a mandatory rematch clause, and a re-fight with Usyk could take place in October.
Suleiman also presented a special WBC belt for which Usyk and Fury will fight. Its design uses the colors of the Ukrainian and British flags. Pope Francis has already blessed the World Boxing Council belt that will be on the line in the title fight.
