On May 18, a unification fight for the title of absolute world champion in heavyweight will take place.
Alexander Krasyukpromoter of the WBO/WBA/IBF/IBO heavyweight champion Alexandra Usikacommented on the upcoming fight between the Ukrainian and the WBC title holder Tyson Fury for the title of absolute world heavyweight champion.
“I don’t have much confidence that the rematch will take place. If Tyson loses, will he have the confidence to get into the ring again? Theoretically it can, but we all know what happened with the rematch against Wladimir Klitschko.”
“Usyk actually had a triple camp for this fight. It started in September, and the fight was supposed to take place in December last year. We came to the Ngannou fight to get into the ring and announce the fight for the undisputed championship, but his team jumped up and asked for a delay because their fighter wasn’t looking good. Usyk gave Fury extra time to prepare. We were supposed to meet on February 17, and then everything was postponed to May.”
The unification fight between Usik and Fury will take place on May 18. The list of other fights that will take place as part of the boxing evening in Saudi Arabia is also known. Among them is the fight between Ukrainian Daniel Lapin and Portuguese Octavio Pudivitra for the WBA Continental light heavyweight title.
The event will be hosted by Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The WBC proposes to reform the judges for the reporting fight, increasing their number to 5-6 people. Penalties for boxers who refuse to fight are $10 million.
WBC President Mauricio Suleiman announced that an agreement had been concluded between the boxers for a re-fight. The WBO is also ready to sanction the second fight. It was reported that the fate of a possible rematch depends on the holding of the first fight. Fury said that the contract has a mandatory rematch clause, and a re-fight with Usyk could take place in October.
Suleiman also presented a special WBC belt for which Usyk and Fury will fight. Its design uses the colors of the Ukrainian and British flags. Pope Francis has already blessed the World Boxing Council belt that will be on the line in the title fight.
