The choice of an alternative world boxing federation does not guarantee its members the tickets to the Olympic Games and the well-being of athletes promised by the organization, the International Boxing Association (IBA) said in a statement.
“Countries that choose World Boxing are not guaranteed to participate in the Olympic Games as promised, nor are they guaranteed a prosperous future for their athletes. World Boxing’s aggressive campaign is based solely on speculation about the sport’s Olympic future, which in fact they cannot guarantee. Boxing’s presence at the Olympics is the livelihood of many national federations, so they are likely to make promises that may never be fulfilled. First of all, World Boxing does not have sufficient funds to implement such an ambitious project, nor the necessary experience, while the IBA has all the resources to build the future of boxing.
World Boxing must provide evidence of good governance, despite a flawed voting system that gives more power to founding members rather than distributing voting rights equally among all member countries, as the IBA and most international federations. Make no mistake: no World Boxing member who joins the organization after its first convention has the same voting rights as the founders, the statement said.
The IBA allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions under their national flags, despite recommendations from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The IBA was stripped of its recognition by the IOC last summer. The organization’s exclusion from the Olympic movement was later confirmed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
The alternative organization World Boxing was founded by national federations who left the IBA. In response to the IOC’s statements regarding the possible exclusion of boxing from the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, World Boxing is seeking Olympic recognition and participation in the Olympic tournament.
