The Ukrainian is not planning a fight with Fundora in the near future
Interim WBC junior middleweight champion Sergei Bogachuk stated that his confrontation with the WBO and WBC super middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora is a work in progress, but is not his initial career goal.
“I told many people that Fundora will win the fight against Tim Tszyu. I think a fight with Fundora is possible, but not now, but a little later.”
The promoter of the Ukrainian champion Tom Loeffler, talking about Bogachuk’s potential opponents, mentioned Tim Tszyu and Errol Spence. The promoter noted that Sergey is not only an interim champion, but also a mandatory contender for the WBC belt. Subsequently, according to him, Bogachuk may also take a mandatory position according to the WBO.
Bogachuk himself previously expressed the opinion that he should make several defenses of the interim title before arranging a high-profile fight – for example, with the same Sebastian Fundora.
Let us remind you that the Ukrainian confidently defeated the American Brian Mendoza in a fight that took place at the end of March in Las Vegas. At the end of 12 rounds, all judges gave the victory to Bogachuk – 118-110, 117-111 and 117-111.
Bogachuk was originally supposed to fight for a full WBC championship belt with Fundora. However, the fight fell through, as the American was appointed to replace Keith Thurman in the fight against Tszyu.
Fundora defeated Tim Tszyu by split decision in late March to win the WBO and WBC junior middleweight titles. Both boxers received cuts and spent most of the fight bloody.
After the fight, the American’s promoter Sampson Levkovich said that the priority goal for his protégé is a rematch with Tszyu before meeting Terence Crawford or Errol Spence.
