Russian Matvey Kanikovsky reached the final of the European Judo Championships taking place in Zagreb.
Kanikovsky, competing in the weight category up to 100 kg, defeated the representative of Azerbaijan Zelim Kotsoev in the semifinals. In the final, the Russian athlete’s opponent will be Ilya Sulamanidze (Georgia).
Another Russian, Inal Tasoev (over 100 kg), will also compete for gold; in the semi-final he defeated Slovakian Marius Fizel. Another representative of Russia, Tamerlan Bashaev, lost to Georgian Guram Tushishvili in the semifinals and will compete for bronze with Dutchman Jur Spijkers.
Alice Startseva (over 78 kg) finished the fight for medals, losing to Frenchwoman Léa Fontaine in the first fight of the repechage tournament.
Russian athletes compete in Zagreb in neutral status.
