The heavyweight championship belt will be at stake in the fight between Alexander Usik and Tyson Fury
David Higginspromoter of the WBO interim heavyweight champion Joseph Parker, said that the New Zealander wants to have a title fight for a full championship belt. However, the boxer is ready to consider other opponents.
“Boxers say they will fight anyone, and in Joseph’s case it’s true. He would like to get on the fight card in Saudi Arabia in September or October and whoever he is asked to fight, he will fight.”
“The other thing is that he is the interim WBO champion, mandatory and next in line. Every boxer wants to fight for the world title. Joseph, of course, would like to fight the winner of the Usyk-Fury fight, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that will happen right away.”
“It would be great to have a rematch with Joshua. But I’m not sure that this will be the next fight. I think Joseph will beat Joshua now. All talk aside, I think he will beat AJ. Joshua’s promoters, of course, think otherwise, but they recognize that there is a risk for their fighter.”
The WBO heavyweight champion belt is held by Alexander Usyk. The Ukrainian will next fight with Tyson Fury for the title of absolute world champion on May 18.
Next in line to defend Usyk’s titles is Filip Hrgovic, the IBF mandatory challenger. The Croatian will fight against Briton Daniel Dubois on June 1. After Hrgovic, it is the WBO’s turn to defend their titles, where Parker is the mandatory challenger.
Joseph defeated Chinese heavyweight Zhang Zhilei in his last fight. The New Zealander planned to prepare for a rematch with Zhilei, as it was written in their contract.
