On Sunday, Idigov defeated Guruli and won the gold medal at the European Championship in the under 67 kg category. Guruli decided not to continue the fight after the second round. At the award ceremony, the representative of Georgia took off his medal and, after shaking hands with everyone, including Idigov, refused to take a group photo with the rest of the medalists.
“I have decided not to comment on this situation until the end of the Paris Olympic Games. I will only say one thing: before the fight, we were offered a large sum of money. They didn’t want me in the ring. When we gave the final answer, they said they would achieve victory by any means necessary.
My strategy for this fight was to work at a distance to avoid exchanging blows. The Russian boxer lost the first round by a long shot. I didn’t expect the judges to have a choice, but they still gave him a 4-1 lead,” Guruli said, as quoted by Inside the Games.
Russian athletes participated in the European Championships in Belgrade by decision of the International Boxing Association (IBA).
