Lennox Lewis: Fury boxed well for half the distance, but after the equator the fight began to go against him

The legendary boxer believes there were “too many voices” in the “Gypsy King’s” corner.

Legendary former world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis analyzed the defeat Tyson Fury from Alexandra Usika in a fight for the title of absolute world heavyweight champion.

“I think there were too many voices in Fury’s corner. It seemed to me that he boxed well for half the distance. He had to box because Usyk was very explosive. I think Tyson needs to cut his corner. For me personally, the main guy in his corner is Coach Sugar Hill. But John Fury, immediately after the knockdown, insisted that Tyson cycle around the ring and take a break. They began to convince Tyson that one 12th round would be enough for him to win. But this was not so. In the 12th round he needed a knockdown or even a knockout.”

“I have never had such terrible pressure in my corner. I’m not trying to humiliate anyone now. But at that moment I thought that there were too many voices in Fury’s corner. Personally, I was confident that in the decisive round he should unleash his fists and try to knock his opponent out of the ring, and not try to “steal” the round. At that moment I was sure that without a knockdown he would not see victory. And when he started working from the jab, I thought: Dude, you’re doing the wrong thing. I think that after the equator the battle began to turn out not in his favor,” Lewis concluded.

On the night of May 19, Usik inflicted the first defeat in his professional career on Briton Tyson Fury in a fight that took place at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). In the ninth round, Alexander knocked down the “Gypsy King” deeply, and only the referee’s intervention prevented the fight from ending ahead of schedule. As a result, the victory was awarded to the Ukrainian by a split decision: 115-112, 113-114 and 114-113.

Usik became the first absolute world heavyweight champion in the era of four belts. In the heavyweight division, the last time Lennox Lewis held absolute status was in 1999, but then three titles were enough for this title.

Alexander is the second boxer in history after Evander Holyfield, who was the absolute world champion in cruiserweight and heavyweight. Also, the Ukrainian boxer became the third (after Terence Crawford and Naoya Inoue) in the era of four prestigious titles to become the absolute champion in two weight categories.

It was reported that an agreement had been reached between Usyk and Fury for a re-fight. The Chairman of the General Authority of Entertainment of Saudi Arabia, Turki Al al-Sheikh, stated that the rematch between Alexander and Tyson is scheduled for October 12-13 in Riyadh.
