American mixed martial arts fighter Gene Herrera has died from injuries sustained in a traffic accident days before his 34th birthday, TMZ reports.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening on the Gandy Bridge in Tampa (Florida, USA). According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, Herrera, who was driving a motorcycle, crashed into another vehicle “at a very high rate of speed.” According to local media, the fighter then hit a concrete fence, was thrown several dozen meters and the motorcycle caught fire. Herrera was pronounced dead at the scene. The second participant in the accident was not injured.
Herrera is a California native who began his professional career in mixed martial arts in 2011. In the UFC, Herrera had four fights, including a loss to Russian Ali Bagautinov. In total, he has 10 victories and 3 defeats in MMA.
