International Boxing Federation President Daryl Peoples explains all the new rules for defending the title.
Absolute heavyweight champion Alexander Usik does not have to vacate the IBF title. The President of the International Boxing Federation, Daryl Peoples, spoke about it.
At the same time, the functionary named some conditions for keeping the belt.
“The rule is the following: you must not have a clause in your contract that provides for retaliation, which in itself becomes an obstacle for you to obtain mandatory protection in the presence of such measures.
Under IBF rules, any current champion can petition for an exception. Any current champion can request an exception to any IBF rule.
As of now, the fight between Hrgovic and Dubois has not been announced for any title. I am sure that the decision to approach me with such a request was made behind the scenes.
If Usyk’s team requests an exception, it will be submitted to the IBF board of directors, and if the board agrees to it, then, most likely, special, exceptional conditions will be applied,” Peoples told boxingscene.
Let’s remember that Usik’s victory over Fury brought him the absolute heavyweight championship. The fight lasted all of 12 rounds. The Ukrainian won by split decision – 115:112, 114:112, 113:114.
In the past, promoter Fury predicted that Usik would lose several championship titles at once.
