UFC: Amanda Nunes defeats Julianna Peña and regains bantamweight belt

UFC confrontation between Amanda Nunes and Julianna Peña had moments of tension with an almost submission by the American, but the lioness did better

The UFC saw this Saturday night, the 30th, an impressive fight between Amanda Nunes and Julianna Penã. The moments of tension began long before the start of the fight, as the American stayed for seven months with the title of bantamweight champion. Despite that, she had no choice, and the belt ended up returning to the hands of its greatest owner.

Amanda Nunes practically didn’t give the American breathing space throughout the five rounds. The Brazilian showed her technique, fled the dangers, left her rival’s face all full of blood and won the unanimous decision, being 50-45, 50-44 and 50-43, to hold again the title of the category up to 61.2kg and go back to being the “champ-champ” of UFC.

“I honestly knew that when the Lioness didn’t catch her prey the first time, she would catch her the second time around. And now I’ve made history, I’m the double champion again! (…) The best thing I did was make my gym. that I’m safe there, that I can grow, and that if I have people dedicated just to me, I can be even better. I was supposed to do the same thing in the last fight, but I wasn’t ready”, said after the fight.

Now, after this epic fight, Amanda Nunes has reached 22 victories in MMA, with only five losses. As the next challenger, the Brazilian is facing an uncertain scenario, as she may have a trilogy with Julianna Peña, a trilogy with Valentina Shevchenko or even a featherweight title defense.

the first two rounds

In the beginning, Amanda Nunes showed inside the Octagon that she would be a more head fighter, who didn’t just have the objective of becoming champion again, but also to take advantage of it to show her superiority. The Brazilian went on to hit Julianna Peña in the face from long distance, and when she got closer, it made the American bend her knees.

At the beginning of the second round, Amanda’s right hook was enough to destabilize Peña. Focused, the Brazilian ordered the American to get up, but it took a long time from that moment until another right cross from above made the opponent fall back to the ground.

Amanda Nunes didn’t want to end the fight right away, and again ordered her rival to get up. On the other side, Peña showed resistance, and managed a good cross that caught Amanda’s face, who managed to get an elbow. At the end of the partial, the lioness sent another left hook against him and applied the third knockdown.

The Brazilian already had it very clear in her mind that winning in the first place was not what she wanted for the rematch. The objective was to show that she not only had the ability to overcome her rival, but also that she was superior in the tactics and precise techniques of the fight. Because of this, Amanda explained the reason why she didn’t finish right away.

“I already expected war, Julianna is a tough athlete, and it’s a title fight, that’s what we have to expect, I don’t want an easy fight either. I needed to prove something today, so I needed five rounds, I needed to not submit her , I needed to prove to her that I’m better than her. It was very important. There were many moments that I could have finished and I held on”, said.
