The International Boxing Association (IBA) has released a statement following the decision of the International Olympic Committee (CIO ) prohibit boxers from federations that are part of the IBA from participating in the 2028 Olympic Games.
The IBA was stripped of its recognition by the IOC last summer. The organization’s exclusion from the Olympic movement was later confirmed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
The IBA announced on Wednesday that it would pay prize money to Olympic boxing medalists at the Paris 2024 Games. The same day, the IOC announced that it would not allow boxers from federations that are part of the IBA to participate in the 2028 Olympic Games.
The Los Angeles Olympic Games will take place in July 2028.
“This is an absolute disgrace from what is supposed to be one of the leading sporting organizations in the world.” It is important to remember that the IBA has never stopped our athletes from participating in any competition, we fully support them and continue to do so at all costs. The IOC seems incapable of recognizing the values we hold dear.
Following the IBA’s announcement of prize funding (for participants in the 2024 Games), the IOC is responding by punishing our boxers, for those people who remain at the center of everything the IBA believes in and supports. This is a double standard and bias that once again shows the true colors of the IOC.
This is clear discrimination against boxing as a whole and the IBA in particular. This statement from the IOC shows and confirms that this organization does not respect the independent international federation and its members.
We remind all our members: the IBA remains a dynamic, financially solid and fully operational international federation. Our events are run at the highest level, including prize money, which provides real support to our athletes and their families. “There will be some extremely exciting changes within the IBA over the next six months,” the IBA said in a statement.
