UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev is on the path to greatness and a record for most consecutive championship wins, the ASA heavyweight champion told . Yevgeny Goncharov.
Makhachev defeated American Dustin Poirier by choke in the fifth round of the UFC 302 tournament in Newark, America, and defended his lightweight belt.
Makhachev won his 14th consecutive victory in the UFC and surpassed the feat of Khabib Nurmagomedov, who retired after a 13-fight championship winning streak.
“I really liked the fight, I really liked Islam’s performance. Yes, and Poirier was surprised today by the way he defended himself from the fight. He had a very good preparation; Poirier did not allow himself to be submitted in the first round. But Islam in this cool fight showed why he is the champion and number one in P4P (regardless of weight category – approximately). I believe Islam Makhachev is on the path to greatness, and 14 consecutive victories in the UFC are testament to that. I believe Islam should break Anderson Silva’s record of 16 wins. Makhachev, 32, has 26 victories and one defeat in mixed martial arts.
