Makhachev announced his desire to fight at Madison Square Garden

UFC lightweight champion of Russia Islam Makhachev said he dreamed of fighting at Madison Square Garden in New York.

At the UFC 302 tournament in Newark (New Jersey, USA), Makhachev defeated American Dustin Poirier by choke in the fifth round and defended the title.

— Islam, what awaits you in the future? You said you’d like to fight in New York this year.

“Honestly, I want to fight in the Madison Square Garden arena.” I think the American fans like me and expect a good fight. If they give me a chance to fight there, that’s my dream,” the Russian said at a press conference.

Makhachev paid tribute to Poirier’s good preparation for the fight.

“Dustin prepared well for the fight, he and the team did a great job, improved transfer protection,” he noted.

The fighter also reiterated that he wants to win the title in two weight classes in the UFC.

— Of course, who doesn’t want to become a double champion? It’s every fighter’s dream. I want to make history as a double champion. “I train hard every morning,” Makhachev added.

Makhachev defended his UFC lightweight title for the third time in a row. Today, the 32-year-old Russian has 26 victories and one defeat in mixed martial arts.
