Lennox Lewis: Wilder should leave the game with his abilities intact

Deontay lost to Zhang Zhilei by knockout

Legendary former world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis believes that the ex-world champion Deontay Wilder (43-4-1, 42 KO) should retire.

“Deontay Wilder told us before the fight that he would retire if he didn’t win. I think this is a wise decision. He has done more than build a life in which he can take care of his daughter. So before he suffers any more damage, it’s best to leave the game with his abilities intact, because life is far from over with boxing.”

The fight between Zhang and Wilder took place in Saudi Arabia and became the central event of a large-scale boxing evening. Zhilei spectacularly sent Wilder to the canvas by technical knockout in the fifth round.

Deontay suffered his fourth career loss. Before the Zhang fight, Wilder also lost to Parker in December 2023.

At the end of April, the Chairman of the General Authority of Entertainment of Saudi Arabia, Turki Al al-Sheikh, announced a fight between Wilder and another American, Jared Andersen. The event is scheduled in Los Angeles at BMO Stadium on August 3. However, Deontay himself noted that he would end his career if he lost to Zhang.
