Zagitova: “Boxing helps me stay in shape for figure skating”

Olympic figure skating champion Alina Zagitova in a conversation with reporters, she shared her impressions of water sports and explained why she was into boxing.

On Monday, Zagitova attended the synchronized swimming competitions at the Friendship Games in Kazan. As it became known earlier, the 20-year-old athlete began boxing training. At the end of June, she held a demonstration training session with two-time Olympic boxing champion Oleg Saitov.

– You didn’t want to perform out of competition during these competitions? Volleyball players swim.

– That would be interesting, but I don’t swim as well as our synchronized swimmers. Maybe I’ll try in the future. I really liked it, very beautiful, similar to figure skating. I am happy to have participated in this event.

– Isn’t it stuffy?

— It’s warmer here than at our rink, but I love the heat.

– Tell us about your impressions?

– Very well. I was here for the first time in synchronized swimming. It’s a very cool alternative to international competitions. And although it is called an international competition, but without other countries. We understand this whole situation, but it does not prevent athletes from being the best and being friends between countries. This is the main mission – to make friends from all countries.

“Now many are trying their hand at different sports. Divers in the water said skaters can wind more than they can from the springboard.

– I jumped in Sochi Park, from the highest. In principle, I liked it, but it would probably be scary in the water. But all the difficulties harden, why not, you can try in the future.

– Did you consult your father in boxing experience? Fights are common in hockey.

– There is even boxing training which helps in hockey, but in figure skating it also helps in a certain way, it is difficult to keep in shape all the time, but here we work on all the muscle groups, the respiratory system.
