James Ali Bashir: Sirenko needs to be ready for a big fight

The coach also urges the Ukrainian not to focus solely on the knockout

Former coach of the absolute world heavyweight champion Alexander Usik James Ali Bashirwho now trains another heavyweight Vladislav Sirenkospoke about working with the Ukrainian prospectus.

“Boxing is a really cautious business now. We don’t have that many opponents who are ready to get into the ring against an unbeaten fighter. We don’t have many who are ready to fight against Vlad Sirenko. These are very difficult times.”

“My philosophy is this: you can’t fight top guys while fighting with fighters of a level much lower than the top. We just stay active. You can’t just stay in the gym sparring and think that it will keep you in a rut. Because it makes the fighter psychologically unprepared for the big test. Yes, we are here, we fight and take on the opponents we have.”

“I warn Vlad about this because I have seen this many, many times in my career. When frustration grows and when it comes to the big fight, the fighter is not ready. So I just tell him to take it in stride and move forward.”

“I don’t force him to do knockouts. Knockouts are good, but I teach him to be educated in the ring. I’m pointing out that you can’t knock out everyone. You will have guys with whom you need to think more, and not just go out and fight. I’m trying to bring him the educational side of boxing. I watched a number of fighters, and recently there was a fight between Daniel Dubois and Filip Hrgovic. They just went into the ring to knock each other out. Neither showed a defensive approach to boxing.”

Sirenko defeated American Keith Barr ahead of schedule in his last fight. The Ukrainian knocked down his opponent four times. After the last fall of the American in the fourth round, the referee stopped the fight.

Vladislav had his second fight this year. Before this, the Ukrainian had not entered the ring for several years due to an injury and surgery on his hand.
