Gvozdyk: I’m an underdog in the fight with Benavidez

The Ukrainian has no problems with the fact that his opponent is considered the favorite

Former world light heavyweight champion Alexander Gvozdyk said that he is satisfied with the status of an underdog in a fight with the holder of the “interim” WBC super middleweight title, an American David Benavides.

“I’m more comfortable being an outsider. Because it immediately removes the weight of responsibility. No questions. This is not the first time this has happened to me. I’m an underdog, and that’s good. There are no problems at all. To be honest, this is even fair. Benavidez is a big star and all that,” said the Ukrainian.

Earlier, Gvozdyk announced the completion of preparations for the fight with Benavidez. The Ukrainian will then go to Las Vegas directly for the fight.

The fight between Gvozdyk and Benavidez for the vacant WBC interim light heavyweight title will take place on June 15. The event will be hosted by Las Vegas, with a boxing evening scheduled at the Grand Garden Arena. The fight between Alexander and David will take place on the undercard of the confrontation between WBA champion Gervonta Davis and Frank Martin.

Benavidez, 27, fought his last fight in November 2023. David defeated Demetrius Andrade, who refused to continue the fight after the sixth round. David spent his last few fights in the super middleweight division (up to 168 pounds or 76.2 kg). For the fight with Gvozdyk, he moves up to the light heavyweight category (up to 175 pounds or 79.4 kg).

Gvozdyk knocked out Brazilian boxer Isaac Rodriguez in his last fight. This is Alexander’s third victory after resuming his career. Before this, the Ukrainian knocked out Latvian boxer Richards Bolotniks in the 6th round.
