Russian taekwondo athletes will not participate in the Paris Olympics

Russian taekwondo athletes will not participate in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, said national team head coach Vadim Ivanov.

On Saturday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) published on its official website a list of 14 Russian athletes who, as of June 15, had received neutral status to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games. There is not a single athlete from taekwondo among them. Previously, Maxim Khramtsov, Vladislav Larin, Tatyana Minina and Polina Khan received tickets to the Olympics for the Russian team.

— Now I had a conversation with the president of the Russian Taekwondo Union Anatoly Terekhov, who told me that there was a decision of the IOC that none of our athletes who have obtained a license are allowed to participate in the Olympic Games. Yes, this is the final decision. If I understand correctly, it is not the subject of any discussion or appeal. Without any explanation. And replacing athletes is impossible. Absolutely true: none of our taekwondo athletes will participate in the Paris Olympic Games.

A huge amount of work has been accomplished. And the president of the Russian Taekwondo Union, and the employees of the organization, and the athletes, and the coaching staff of the team. Despite all these obstacles, one could say, that have appeared over the years. We did the most of what was in our power and our abilities. We won four licenses to participate in the Olympic Games. And today we could not get more tickets for the Games, since we did not have the opportunity to gain points in the Olympic ranking. We have done our best under the current circumstances. It’s a shame that the IOC’s decision is final and irrevocable,” Ivanov told RIA Novosti Sport.

The games in Paris will take place from July 26 to August 11.

The IOC announced in December 2023 that it would allow Russian athletes who successfully qualified for the 2024 Olympics to have individual neutral status without a flag, anthem or other national symbol. The IOC also banned the participation of athletes associated with security forces or who have expressed support for the SVO.
