His fight with Haney took on shades of scandal and investigation
American boxer Ryan Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs) announced his retirement on social networks.
Let us remember that at the end of May it became known that Garcia failed a repeat doping test after the fight with Devin Haney. The second sample, like the first, showed a positive result for ostarine, a drug that is used to improve endurance performance.
The Haney-Garcia fight took place in Brooklyn at the end of April. Devin was knocked down three times during the fight. According to the judges’ notes, Ryan triumphed with scores of 114:110 and 115:109. Another judge recorded a draw (112:112).
Garcia, despite the victory, did not take the championship belt from Haney, as he exceeded the agreed weight category limit. According to WBC head Mauricio Sulaiman, the belt does not become vacant, but remains with Devin. After the defeat, Haney himself immediately hinted at revenge.
In June, Ryan was taken out of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel (Beverly Hills, USA) in handcuffs. The athlete started a drunken brawl. He is charged with “vandalism” in the hotel room and hallway, as well as “public accusation.”
I’m officially retired
