Greco-Roman wrestler Sefershaev: “I wanted to participate in the Olympic Games, but I didn’t even get the chance because of the IOC’s requirements. It is unacceptable”

Greco-Roman wrestler Emin Seferchaev described as unacceptable the conditions for admitting Russian athletes to the Paris Olympic Games, proposed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The IOC previously named 14 Russian athletes who, as of June 15, had received neutral status to participate in the 2024 Games. Among them are 10 wrestling representatives. On Wednesday, the executive committee of the Russian Wrestling Federation (FSBR) unanimously supported the decision of Russian wrestlers to participate in the Olympics.

— Some wrestlers say they would like to have opponents of a higher level. What do you think?

— I myself wanted to participate in the Olympic Games, I won the Russian Pre-Olympic Championship, but due to the difficult international situation, the IOC does not allow us. It’s unacceptable, I didn’t even have the chance to qualify for the Olympics, I’m very upset about that.

— How do you deal with this emotionally?

“At first it was very difficult, but now I accept it. I will work to remain among the leaders in the next cycle and qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

— The other guys decided to go to Paris. Do you support them?

— Only two people from our wrestling style (Greco-Roman) will compete: Alan Ostaev and Magomed Murtazaliev. They are not considered leaders, but we, as an entire team, sincerely support them. I hope they show that our country’s wrestlers are the best.

— You have five medals at the Russian championships, you are 26 years old and you are talking about the next Olympic cycle. Where does so much perseverance come from?

— I couldn’t stand it myself, but thanks to my coach Sergei Sergeevich (Popenkov), I continue. I cannot make the decision to end my career myself, it is only a joint decision. We decided to continue until the end. God willing, our health allows us, we will qualify for the next Olympic Games, ”reports the correspondent of , reporting Sefershaev’s words.

The Paris Olympic Games will be held from July 26 to August 11.
