The New York State Sports Commission has suspended former WBC interim world champion, American Ryan Garcia, for one year for an anti-doping violation, reports ESPN.
In 2021, Garcia held the WBC interim world championship belt, which he won with his victory over Briton Luke Campbell by technical knockout in the seventh round.
In April 2024, Garcia inflicted his first defeat on the holder of the WBC championship belt, the American Devin Haney. It was later learned that Garcia had passed a positive doping test. The commission ruled that Garcia’s victory was invalid. The athlete’s suspension is scheduled until April 20, 2025. He must return the $1.2 million he earned for the fight and also pay a fine of $10,000.
“I want to thank the committee and the fans who have supported me throughout this process. This is part of my story, the situation will only make me better. Enjoy this time with my family and friends. Let’s see what happens next, ”the athlete commented on the disqualification.
The day before the hearing at the sports commission, the boxer announced his retirement.
Garcia is 25 years old and has 25 wins and one loss in his professional career.
