“I wanted to go to the Olympics, but that’s okay, let’s move on” – boxer Popov

Silver medalist of the World Youth Championship, Russian boxer Ilya Popov said he would like to participate in the Olympic Games in Paris, but he does not despair and continues to train.

On Saturday, Popov won the gold medal at the BRICS Games, winning the final in the weight category up to 63.5 kg. Russian boxers will not participate in the 2024 Olympics.

— Among the international competitions I have already participated in, the BRICS Games are the best tournament in terms of organization. Great respect to Kazan!

— How do you like the level of competition here?

— Competition is always welcome. This is an international competition, and thank you to the organizers for that. The BRICS Games is a great tournament to keep you motivated. However, constantly boxing with the same opponents at the Russian Championship is not good. It’s great that Russia is organizing such a tournament with boxers from other countries. The strongest boxers from Belarus and Azerbaijan perform here.

— You have an Olympic weight category. Surely you wanted to take part in the Games in Paris?

– Certainly! Every athlete spends his whole life working towards this, participating in the Olympic Games. But we start from what is. We live, we train and move forward,” reports the correspondent of , according to Popov’s words.

The BRICS Games will end on Sunday.
