The promoter believes that money is now the priority
Promoter Frank Warren believes that the decision of the Ukrainian boxer Alexandra Usika from the IBF title in heavyweight is accepted solely due to financial aspects.
At the same time, the promoter of former WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury believes that this will not affect the upcoming arrangements: first, Usyk will have a second fight with Fury, after which the winner of the rematch will meet the winner of the fight between Daniel Dubois and Anthony Joshua.
“All roads will lead to unification again. Usyk will receive a huge fee for the rematch against Tyson, which was written into the contract. That is the position. For Usyk, this is pure business. If it were about titles, he would not give up the IBF belt. Usyk is only here for the money.”
“The rematch is a huge event that everyone wants to see. Either way, the winner will have to face the winner of Dubois vs. Joshua. I’m sure it will be Daniel.”
Let us recall that on the night of May 19, Usyk inflicted the first defeat of his professional career on Tyson Fury in a fight that took place at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). The victory was awarded to the Ukrainian by a split decision of the judges: 115-112, 113-114 and 114-113.
Alexander became the first absolute world heavyweight champion in the era of four belts. In the heavyweight division, the last time Lennox Lewis held absolute status was in 1999, but then three titles were enough for this title.
Usyk subsequently issued a statement in which he announced that he would give the IBF belt to the winner of the British derby between his two former opponents in the ring – Daniel Dubois and Anthony Joshua.. Thus, Alexander lost the status of absolute world heavyweight champion, which he had held for more than a month.
An agreement has been concluded between Usik and Fury for a re-fight. The “Gypsy King” has officially activated the rematch option. The second fight between Alexander and Tyson will take place on December 21, 2024 in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman said he would seek the introduction of video replays in this fight.
The fight between British heavyweights Daniel Dubois and Anthony Joshua has also been officially confirmed for September 21. The arena for the event will be London’s Wembley Stadium. For Dubois, this fight will be the first defense of the IBF title since Usyk gave up the belt.
