Soloveichik on judo competitions in Chelyabinsk: “It is important to give athletes the opportunity to fight with the strongest at home”

President of the Russian Judo Federation Sergei Soloveichik said that the Fonbet Russian judo Tour Chelyabinsk 2024 international tournament provides an opportunity for domestic athletes to compete at home with the strongest opponents from around the world.

Fonbet international judo competitions between men and women – a stage of the series of professional competitions “Russian Judo Tour” will be held in Chelyabinsk on June 29-30.

— We launched these competitions for several reasons. Chelyabinsk is a very symbolic city for us; we have organized numerous international competitions there. The local organization and the governor’s team are very strong.

On the other hand, we started these competitions when we did not understand how the sport and judo were going to develop in the world. We understood that we would have restrictions on participation in international competitions. We needed to give athletes the opportunity to compete with the strongest athletes in the world at home. This year, 13 foreign teams came to us, last year there were 15. In the current conditions, this is a good help. Thanks to the regional policy, 17 people obtained an OI license. Although we had a limited number of qualifying events, there were restrictions on training camps where we could train with other athletes. “In these conditions, the national team, under the leadership of our coaches, achieved very good results,” reports the correspondent according to Soloveichik’s words.

On Friday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed four Russian judokas to compete in the 2024 Olympic Games in neutral status. In total, the Russian team had 12 quotas for participation in the Games – 7 men and 5 women. Later, Soloveichik told that Russian judokas would not participate in the 2024 Games.
