Robert Garcia is the new British coach
Former light heavyweight world champion Alexander Gvozdyk said that Anthony Joshua will give the WBA/WBO/IBF heavyweight title holder Oleksandr Usyk competitive fight.
“Usyk gave a great performance in the first fight and I believe we will see him again. It’s my opinion. I think we will see something similar to what we saw in the first fight. Now Joshua has changed the team and the coach. I know Robert Garcia well because I started with him. I spent the first 5-6 fights with him in the corner, he was my head coach. Garcia knows what he’s doing. He is a great and very talented coach. People say he doesn’t have enough heavyweight experience. But now Joshua is an adult, mature heavyweight. He doesn’t need to learn anything new, he’s not a beginner.”
“If you told me that Garcia would prepare Joshua for his debut and coach him throughout his career, I would say that it is probably not the best option. My opinion is based only on Garcia’s lack of heavyweight experience. But in this particular situation, Joshua is a mature heavyweight who knows everything and is capable of anything. I believe that Robert is the best option to fill in the gaps that were in the first fight with Usyk, which will make the fight more interesting, ”Gvozdyk said in an interview with the YouTube channel WHEN THE SMOKE CLEARS.
Gvozdyk retired in the summer of 2020. The Ukrainian fought his last fight in the fall of 2019, losing to Artur Beterbiev by technical knockout in the tenth round.
The second fight between Usyk and Joshua will take place on August 20 in Saudi Arabia.
In Ukraine, the broadcast of the Usyk-Joshua rematch will be hosted by the MEGOGO media service. Usyk personally acquired the right to broadcast his fight with Joshua in order to transfer them to Ukrainian broadcasters for free.
Last fall, Usyk defeated Joshua by unanimous decision to become world heavyweight champion for the first time.
