“This is an unfair fight, discriminatory measures.” Sports Minister Degtyarev on the IOC’s decision not to allow the strongest judokas to participate in the Olympic Games

The International Olympic Committee is taking discriminatory measures against domestic judokas, not allowing the strongest representatives of this sport to attend the Paris Olympics, the Russian Sports Minister said in an interview with . Mikhail Degtiarev.

Last week, the IOC announced that only four Russian judokas would be allowed to compete in the 2024 Games in neutral status. At the same time, previously, the Russian Judo Federation (RJF) had 12 athletes in the Olympic team based on the number of licenses (7 men and 5 women). After the IOC decision, FDR President Sergei Soloveichik told that Russian judokas would not compete in Paris.

— Russian judokas refused to participate in the Olympic Games. This happened after the International Olympic Committee significantly reduced the number of our athletes who could compete in Paris and did not include all the strongest in the remaining list. How did you react to this?

– This is an unfair fight – discriminatory measures that, unfortunately, are taken by some federations and international institutions. I am sure that this phenomenon is temporary, but it is aimed at eliminating the strongest athletes. World sport is losing without the Russians. Absolutely everyone recognizes this – in the West, in the countries of the South and in the East. I hear this from all officials at the international level with whom I have communicated over the last month and a half.

— It turns out that the heads of international sports federations are afraid to take a step towards Russia?

“Yes, they are afraid to take a step forward,” Degtyarev told .

The Paris Summer Games will take place from July 26 to August 11.
