Commentator and presenter Dmitry Guberniev told that the International Olympic Committee (IOC ) is making a serious mistake by not allowing top Russian athletes to participate in the Olympics, while Russia remains open to the world.
On Saturday, the FSBR announced that Russian wrestlers who had received an invitation from the IOC had refused to participate in the Olympic Games. The decision was made following a comprehensive meeting with the coaches of the Russian national freestyle, women’s and Greco-Roman wrestling teams, as well as with the athletes. The FSBR said it “does not accept the principle of non-sporting selection that guided the IOC in establishing the list of eligible athletes, the purpose of which is to undermine the principle of team unity.”
— The decision is very difficult. I understand both judokas and wrestlers in this situation. The vector is changing, we hoped that the leaders would leave, but this is not happening. I am not giving up my post. I understand judokas and wrestlers in the sense that they tried until the very last moment to get licenses and won them. Then it is up to the international federations to decide. They decided so, I respect their decision. But I will sincerely support those who will go to the Olympics from Russia.
At the same time, I think that the IOC, given these non-admissions, is making a serious mistake. When you look at Russian sport under a microscope… Now, if you looked a little differently, maybe the situation of judokas and wrestlers was different. Apparently, they are slaves to the manual. They are trying to continue to erase us. But hell will be erased! We will always remain open to the world, as on the Moscow Sports Day: we communicate with an American, a Frenchman and speak different languages. Sport continues in the country, although it is very difficult for us, “Guberniev told .
In June, the IOC admitted 10 Russian wrestlers to the 2024 Games with neutral status. The list included Nachyn Mongush, Shamil Mamedov, Arslan Bagaev, Abdulla Kurbanov, Alan Ostaev, Magomed Murtazaliev, Natalya Malysheva, Veronika Chumikova, Alina Kasabieva and Elizaveta Petlyakova. Later, Chumikova announced that she would not go to the Olympics due to health reasons. At the same time, Olympic champions Abdulrashid Sadulaev, Zaurbek Sidakov and Musa Evloev were not included in the number of those admitted to participate in the Games.
In February 2022, the IOC recommended that sports federations not allow Russians and Belarusians to participate in international tournaments. Later, the recommendations were softened, and in December 2023, IOC chief Thomas Bach said that the organization would allow Russian and Belarusian athletes who had passed the selection process to the 2024 Summer Games in an individual neutral status. Compliance with the selection criteria is confirmed by a special IOC commission.
The games in Paris will take place from July 26 to August 11.
