Ishmuratova supports Russian wrestlers’ decision to refuse to participate in 2024 Games

Double Olympic biathlon champion Svetlana Ichmouratova told that she fully supports the decision of Russian wrestlers who received an invitation from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to the Paris Games not to attend the competition.

“I fully support the decision of our athletes and the Wrestling Federation. If you go, then on an equal footing,” Ishmuratova told .

On Saturday, the Russian Wrestling Federation announced that Russian wrestlers who received an invitation from the IOC had refused to participate in the Olympic Games. The decision was made following a comprehensive meeting with the coaches of the Russian national freestyle, women’s and Greco-Roman wrestling teams, as well as with the athletes. The FSBR said it “does not accept the principle of non-sporting selection that guided the IOC in establishing the list of eligible athletes, the purpose of which is to undermine the principle of team unity.”

In June, the IOC admitted 10 Russian wrestlers to the 2024 Games with neutral status. The list included Nachyn Mongush, Shamil Mamedov, Arslan Bagaev, Abdulla Kurbanov, Alan Ostaev, Magomed Murtazaliev, Natalya Malysheva, Veronika Chumikova, Alina Kasabieva and Elizaveta Petlyakova. Later, Chumikova announced that she would not go to the Olympics due to health reasons. At the same time, Olympic champions Abdulrashid Sadulaev, Zaurbek Sidakov and Musa Evloev were not included in the number of those admitted to participate in the Games.

In February 2022, the IOC recommended that sports federations not allow Russians and Belarusians to participate in international tournaments. Later, the recommendations were softened, and in December 2023, IOC chief Thomas Bach said that the organization would allow Russian and Belarusian athletes who had passed the selection process to the 2024 Summer Games in an individual neutral status. Compliance with the selection criteria is confirmed by a special IOC commission.

The games in Paris will take place from July 26 to August 11.
