President of the Russian Wrestling Federation Mikhail Mamiashvili told that the International Olympic Committee (IOC ) failed to act responsibly in admitting Russian athletes to the Paris Olympics.
On Saturday, the press service of the Russian Wrestling Federation reported that Russian wrestlers who received an invitation from the IOC had refused to participate in the 2024 Summer Games in Paris.
“We waited until the last moment for the IOC to follow the path of common sense and show its responsibility, including towards our sport. We followed the selection process and thought that this would be fundamental [решением]“But no,” Mamiashvili told .
In June, the IOC admitted 10 Russian wrestlers to the 2024 Games with neutral status: Nachyn Mongush, Shamil Mamedov, Arslan Bagaev, Abdulla Kurbanov, Alan Ostaev, Magomed Murtazaliev, Natalya Malysheva, Veronika Chumikova, Alina Kasabieva and Elizaveta Petlyakova. Chumikova later announced that she would not go to the Olympics due to health reasons.
In February 2022, the IOC recommended that sports federations not allow Russians and Belarusians to participate in international tournaments. Later, the recommendations were softened, and in December 2023, IOC chief Thomas Bach said that the organization would allow Russian and Belarusian athletes who had passed the selection process to the 2024 Summer Games in an individual neutral status. Compliance with the selection criteria is confirmed by a special IOC commission.
The games in Paris will take place from July 26 to August 11.
