Russian freestyle wrestler Shamil Mamedov has entered the entry list for the Summer Olympics in Paris, reports the press service of the United World of Wrestling (UWW).
The Russian, who was admitted to the 2024 Games in neutral status, is on the list of 16 participants in the tournament in the weight category up to 65 kg. In total, 97 freestyle wrestlers will participate in the Olympic Games.
Earlier, information appeared on the website of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that Mamedov had accepted the IOC’s invitation to perform in the French capital. However, last week, the Russian Wrestling Federation (FSBR) announced that Russian wrestlers will not go to the Olympic Games.
In February 2022, the IOC recommended that sports federations not allow Russians and Belarusians to participate in international tournaments. Later, the recommendations were softened, and in December 2023, IOC chief Thomas Bach said that the organization would allow Russian and Belarusian athletes who had passed the selection process to the 2024 Summer Games in an individual neutral status. Compliance with the selection criteria is confirmed by a special IOC commission.
The games in Paris will take place from July 26 to August 11.
