The Ukrainian has decided to take a break from his career until next year
Cutman for the IBF and IBO Lightweight World Champion Vasily Lomachenko Russ Anber commented on the Ukrainian’s decision to refuse to fight this year with the WBA belt holder Gervonta “Tank” Davis.
“I was surprised because I was in Las Vegas with Bob Arum and we were both talking about how much we liked the fight. We thought it was a good fight for Lomachenko. He hasn’t fought someone his size in a long time. You know, Lomachenko keeps fighting middleweights. So I thought it would be a good fight.”
“Yes, I am quite surprised. Sorry, I can’t give you more details about why this fight won’t happen. I heard the same thing as you. I don’t have inside information, I haven’t talked to Egis Klimas about it. But Lomachenko said he wants to wait until next year.”
Let us recall that the negotiations about the Lomachenko-Davis fight were interrupted after the Ukrainian decided to take a break from his career. Vasily intends to rest for the rest of the season and return to the ring in 2025.
Lomachenko’s managers were reportedly in talks for some time about holding a fight with Davis. The event was planned for November 2024 in Las Vegas, USA at the MGM Grand or T-Mobile Arena.
Earlier, Vasyl Lomachenko’s manager Egis Klimas said that the Ukrainian wants to spend more time with his family and spoke about his lack of motivation at the moment.
On May 12, Lomachenko defeated Australian George Kambosos by technical knockout in his last fight. The Ukrainian won the vacant IBF lightweight belt, which was previously vacated by his previous opponent Devin Haney. Vasily also took the IBO belt, which was held by Kambosos.
On the night of June 16, Gervonta defended his championship title by knocking out fellow countryman Frank Martin. The 29-year-old boxer remains undefeated, with 28 of his 30 victories coming ahead of schedule.
