Spanish judoka receives threats after beating Japanese opponent at Paris 2024 Olympics

Spanish judoka Francisco Garrigosa received threats after a fight with a Japanese opponent at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Marca reports.

On Saturday, the Spaniard beat Japan’s Ryuju Nagayama, a two-time world championship bronze medallist, in the 60kg category. The decision came despite Garrigos apparently maintaining the choke after the referee called mate (an order to temporarily stop the fight).

Nagayama disagreed with the decision to award Garrigos an ippon and refused to shake the Spaniard’s hand or leave the mat. Nagayama eventually bowed to the mat and left. He stayed in the arena for a while longer before finally leaving.

The Spanish athlete’s coach, Kino Ruiz, spoke about the threats his fighter received after the fight.

“They told him not to come to Japan because he wouldn’t be well received there, it’s a shame.” “I don’t know what they’re protesting because there are rules that say when you faint on the ground you lose the fight, it’s by ippon,” the coach said.

Nagayama won the repechage bout against Yang Yunwei of Taiwan, then won the bronze medal with a victory over Salih Yildiz of Turkey.

Garrigos reached the semifinals, where he lost to eventual gold medalist Eldos Smetov of Kazakhstan. Garrigos, like Nagayama, won a bronze medal.
