Italian Infrastructure and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini has criticised the decision to allow athletes disqualified from the 2023 World Championships based on gender identity tests to compete in the women’s boxing competition at the Paris Olympics.
In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) suspended Algerians Iman Khelif and Lin Yuting (Taiwan) from the World Championships in India for failing to meet eligibility criteria. Following gender testing, the athletes were found to have XY chromosomes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) cleared them to compete in women’s competitions in 2024. On August 1, Khelif will face Italy’s Angela Carini.
– Khelif was banned from participating in the world boxing championships, but is allowed to compete in the Olympic Games, she will meet our Angela Carini. A Mexican athlete who was dating Khelif said: “His punches hurt me, a lot of pain, I don’t think I’ve ever felt that in my 13 years of boxing, even against male sparring partners.” It’s a slap in the face to sports ethics and the authority of the Olympic Games,” Salvini told La Gazetta dello Sport.
“In events that represent the highest values of sport, the safety of male and female athletes must be guaranteed, as well as respect for fair competition from a competitive point of view. In Angela Carini’s case, this will not happen,” quotes the Italian Minister of Youth and Sports, Andrea Abodi.
Boxing competitions at the Olympic Games are organized by a special unit created by the IOC. In June 2023, the IOC session expelled the IBA from the Olympic movement by a majority vote.
The Olympic Games in the French capital will end on August 11.
