Athletistic/OI-2024. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has spoken out about the participation of athletes who have not passed a gender test in women’s competitions.

On August 1, Italian boxer Angela Carini refused to continue her fight in the 1/8 finals of the Olympic Games against Algerian Iman Khelif, who in 2023 did not pass the gender test and was suspended from the World Boxing Championship.

“I believe that athletes with male genetic characteristics should not compete in women’s categories. This is not about discrimination, but about protecting the rights of female athletes who should be able to compete on an equal footing. It was an unfair fight,” Meloni was quoted as saying by ANSA.

Carini injured her nose during her fight with Khelif. According to her, the pain was unbearable and she decided to give up. After the winner was announced, the Italian refused to shake Khelif’s hand, repeatedly stressed the injustice of the situation and burst into tears in the ring.
