Sportswomen Iman Khelif and Lin Yuting were victims of arbitrary decisions by the International Boxing Association (IBA), according to a statement published on the website of the International Olympic Committee (IOC ).
In 2023, the IBA suspended Algerians Iman Khelif and Lin Yuting (Taiwan) from the World Championships in India for failing to meet eligibility criteria. Following gender testing, the athletes were found to have XY chromosomes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) cleared them to compete in women’s competitions in 2024.
Earlier, Italy’s Angela Carini broke down in tears after refusing to continue her 1/8 finals boxing match in the up to 66kg weight category against Khelif at the 2024 Olympics.
“These two athletes were victims of a sudden and arbitrary decision by the IBA. Towards the end of the 2023 IBA World Championships, they were suddenly disqualified without any due process.
According to the IBA protocol, this decision was initially taken only by the IBA Secretary General and the Director General. The IBA Board of Directors ratified it only after that and only then demanded that a procedure be established and reflected in the IBA regulations to be followed in similar cases in the future. The protocol also stipulates that the IBA must “establish a clear procedure for gender testing”.
“The attack on these two athletes is based entirely on an arbitrary decision taken without any due process. Especially since these athletes have been competing at a high level for many years,” the IOC statement said.
The Olympic Games in the French capital will end on August 11.
