European Boxing Confederation (EUBC) Secretary General Kirill Shchekutyev told that the organisation would support Italy’s Angela Carini, who lost early to Algeria’s Imam Khelif, who had previously failed gender tests.
In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) suspended Khelif and Lin Yuting (Taiwan) from the World Championships in India for failing to meet eligibility criteria. Following gender testing, the athletes were found to have XY chromosomes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) cleared them to compete in women’s competitions in 2024.
On Thursday, Italian Angela Carini withdrew from her fight against Khelif in the 1/8 finals in the weight category up to 66 kg. The athlete complained in her corner about her opponent’s blows being too painful.
“We are watching with regret what is happening in boxing at the Paris Games. In particular, we are talking about a fight with the participation of a representative of Algeria, who has repeatedly failed the gender test at the IBA competitions. And according to the rules of all organizations, athletes with such results in gender tests cannot compete and box with other girls. What we are seeing now in Paris contradicts all the laws of sports. We do not understand where the IOC is looking, how it allows such things, the meaning of all this. I know that the IBA will support women and athletes who have faced various challenges at the Olympic Games. For our part, from the EUBC, I can say that we will also support European boxers. For example, the EUBC will support and help the Italian Angela Carini, who lost in an unequal battle,” Shchekutyev told .
The Olympic Games in the French capital will end on August 11.
