British journalist Piers Morgan said it was unfair to allow athletes born with a male chromosome to compete in women’s competitions, as it gave them a physiological advantage over biological women.
Formerly Italian Angela Carini burst into tears after refusing to continue the 1/8 final of the boxing match in the weight category up to 66 kg against an Algerian Iman Khelif at the 2024 Olympic Games. In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) suspended Khelif and Lin Yuting (Taiwan) from the World Championships in India for failing to meet eligibility criteria. Following gender testing, the athletes were found to have XY chromosomes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) cleared them to compete in women’s competitions in 2024.
“This is a more complex case than the wave of shameful transgender scandals that have engulfed women’s sports in recent years. Khelif is said to suffer from a condition in which she has some female reproductive organs, but her testosterone levels are much higher than those of women. As a result, she is physically superior to women, as evidenced by her powerful physique. In other words, she has an unfair advantage.
It is an undeniable medical and scientific truth that anyone born with male “biology” has a distinct physical advantage over biological women. This is why we separate women’s and men’s competitions in the Olympics. Otherwise, women are unlikely to win a single medal. To pretend that this is not the case is either profoundly mistaken or deliberately lying.
“I believe all transgender athletes should be banned from competing in women’s competitions. The same goes for athletes born with XY chromosomes, which also give them a physiological advantage over biological females. They should either compete against men, as most have done in the past, or in a new open category. What happened in the Olympic boxing ring must not be repeated, or the spirit and integrity of the Games will be irrevocably tarnished,” Morgan wrote in his column for The Sun.
The Olympic Games will end on August 11.
