The Bulgarian Ministry of Youth and Sports has expressed concern over the performance of female athletes at the 2024 Olympics, who failed the gender test.
In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) suspended Algerians Iman Khelif and Lin Yuting (Taiwan) from the World Championships in India for failing to meet eligibility criteria. Following gender testing, the athletes were found to have XY chromosomes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) cleared them to compete in women’s competitions in 2024.
On Thursday, Italy’s Angela Carini refused to continue her 1/8 final boxing match in the weight category up to 66 kg against Khelif at the 2024 Olympics. Carini fell to her knees and burst into tears in the ring. On Friday, Taiwan’s representative Lin Yuting beat Uzbekistan’s Sitora Turdibekova 5-0 in the 1/8 final in the weight category up to 57 kg and will meet Bulgaria’s Svetlana Kamenova in the quarterfinals.
— Regulations create the conditions for the conflicts that we are already witnessing. There is obviously a problem that existed before the Olympic Games, but which fully manifested itself in Paris. Considering the many opinions on this subject, which have become topical in recent times, the Ministry of Youth and Sports firmly believes that the Olympic values of clean sport, fair play, respect, solidarity and mutual respect must not be violated in any sport.
In the context of the above, the Ministry of Youth and Sports expresses hope that the boxing tournament will be held without incident and in accordance with Olympic values, the statement said.
The Olympic Games will end on August 11.
