The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has received a letter from the International Boxing Association (IBA) regarding gender testing of female boxers competing at the 2024 Olympic Games, but does not consider the testing to be legitimate, IOC communications director Mark Adams said.
The IBA had previously sent a letter to the IOC containing information regarding athletes suspended for failure to meet eligibility criteria.
— These were illegitimate tests. There was a letter, I can confirm that. But the tests, I repeat, were illegitimate. And I think it’s an ugly situation, which only increases the media pressure on female athletes.
“The method of testing, the idea of these tests – all of this is not applicable. So I will not go into details,” Adams said at a press conference.
In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) suspended Iman Khelif (Algeria) and Lin Yuting (Taiwan) from the World Championships in India for failing to meet eligibility criteria. Following gender testing, the athletes were found to have XY chromosomes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) cleared them to compete in women’s competitions in 2024.
In the quarter-finals in the 66 kg category, Khelif beat the Hungarian Luca Hamori with a score of 5 to 0. Thus, the Algerian secured bronze at the 2024 Olympics.
The Paris Olympics will end on August 11.
