A Taiwanese athlete who previously failed a gender identity test has reached the semifinals of the 2024 Games boxing tournament.

Taiwan’s Lin Yuting has reached the semi-finals of the boxing competition at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

In the quarterfinals in the weight category up to 57 kg, Yuting defeated Bulgarian Svetlana Staneva with a score of 5:0.

The semi-final match is scheduled for August 7. Lin Yuting’s opponent will be Esra Yildiz of Turkey.

In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) suspended Yuting and Algerian Iman Khelif from the World Championships in India for failing to meet eligibility criteria. Following gender testing, the athletes were found to have XY chromosomes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) cleared them to compete in women’s competitions in 2024.

On Thursday, Italy’s Angela Carini refused to continue her 1/8 final boxing match in the weight category up to 66 kg against Khelif at the 2024 Olympics. Carini fell to her knees and burst into tears in the ring.

In the quarter-finals in the 66 kg category, Khelif beat the Hungarian Luca Hamori with a score of 5 to 0. Thus, the Algerian secured bronze at the 2024 Olympics.

The Olympic Games will end on August 11.
