Bulgarian Svetlana Staneva refused to shake hands with Taiwan’s Lin Yuting after her quarter-final match in the boxing competition at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
In the quarterfinals in the weight category up to 57 kg, Yuting defeated Staneva with a score of 5:0.
After the fight, Staneva raised her hands, showing crossed fingers. The network suggests that this gesture denotes XX chromosomes.
The semi-final match is scheduled for August 7. Lin Yuting’s opponent will be Esra Yildiz of Turkey.
In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) suspended Yuting from the World Championships in India for failing to meet eligibility criteria. Following the gender test, it was proven that the athlete has XY chromosomes. Staneva was awarded bronze at the 2023 World Cup. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed them to compete in women’s competitions in 2024.
The Olympic Games will end on August 11.
