The Algerian Olympic Committee has said it is ready to take legal action following media reports concerning a representative of the Algerian boxing team. Iman Khelif who has already failed a gender identity test.
On Thursday, Italian Angela Carini refused to continue her 1/8 final boxing match in the weight category up to 66 kg against Khelif at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Carini fell to her knees and burst into tears in the ring. On Friday, it was announced that the Italian had decided to end her career.
In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) suspended Khelif and Lin Yuting (Taiwan) from the World Championships in India for failing to meet eligibility criteria. Following gender testing, the athletes were found to have XY chromosomes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) cleared them to compete in women’s competitions in 2024.
“Following a formal complaint we filed with the IOC regarding a serious violation of sports ethics and the Olympic Charter in relation to Iman Khalifa, the IOC has issued a warning to the offenders demanding that they remove all publications that discredit the athlete’s reputation.
“We reserve the right to prosecute all those who participated in the vile campaign against our champion,” the statement said.
In the quarter-finals in the 66 kg category, Khelif beat the Hungarian Luca Hamori with a score of 5 to 0. Thus, the Algerian secured bronze at the 2024 Olympics.
The athlete’s father, Amar Khelif, had previously shown documents and childhood photographs proving that she was a woman.
