Algerian president supports boxer who failed gender test after reaching semi-finals at 2024 Olympics

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune noted the speech of the country’s representative on the social network X Iman Khelif and wished him good luck in the decisive matches of the boxing tournament at the 2024 Olympic Games.

In the quarter-finals in the 66 kg category, Khelif beat the Hungarian Luca Hamori with a score of 5 to 0. Thus, the Algerian secured bronze at the 2024 Olympics.

In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) suspended Khelif from the World Championships in India for failing to meet eligibility criteria. Following gender testing, the athlete was found to have XY chromosomes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has admitted Khelif to women’s competitions in 2024.

— You glorify Algeria, the Algerian woman and Algerian boxing. We will be there for you, whatever your results. Good luck for the next rounds and moving forward,” wrote the Algerian leader.

The Olympic Games in the French capital will end on August 11.
