Ukrainian to fight Vergil Ortiz on August 10
WBC World Champion in the first middleweight category, Ukrainian Sergey Bogachuk told how he planned to join the army at the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
“A close friend of mine joined the army, and I said, ‘I’ll go with you. We’ll go together.’ And he said, ‘No, you’re needed in boxing. You’re a champion. Are you a professional soldier or a professional boxer? You need to box. You need to go to the United States and raise the Ukrainian flag. That’s what you need to do.’”
“I am proud to be Ukrainian, and with every fight I want to show the Ukrainian people that Ukraine is a strong country. My goal now is to motivate my country: to be strong, to be a winner, to be a champion.”
Bogachuk will next fight against WBO International welterweight champion Vergil Ortiz on August 10. The event will take place in Las Vegas at the Michelob Ultra Arena in the famous Mandalay Bay casino.
At stake in the confrontation will be the interim WBC title, which is owned by Bogachuk. The fight between Sergey and Virgil will take place under the auspices of the Riyadh Season.
Both boxers have already spoken about the confrontation. The Ukrainian emphasized that he is not going to part with the WBC interim world champion belt. Virgil stated that his boxing style is similar to Sergey’s.
Let us recall that the Ukrainian confidently defeated the American Brian Mendoza in a fight that took place in late March in Las Vegas. Following 12 rounds, all judges gave the victory to Bogachuk – 118-110, 117-111 and 117-111.
Vergil Ortiz defeated Tomas Dulorme from Puerto Rico in his last fight. The American has won all his fights ahead of schedule.
